You Know What's NAD+ Potential Benefits?
Potential Benefits
NAD+ is crucial for maintaining the mitochondria of living organisms and regulating genes related to aging. However, as we age, the levels of NAD+ in our bodies sharply decline. "As we get older, we lose NAD+. By the age of 50, your levels are about half of what they were at 20," said Professor David Sinclair from Harvard University in an interview.
Research shows that the reduction of NAD+ is associated with age-related diseases, including accelerated aging, metabolic disorders, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. The decline in NAD+ levels is linked to age-related diseases due to a decrease in functional metabolism. However, supplementing NAD+ levels has shown anti-aging effects in animal models, displaying promising results in reversing age-related diseases, extending lifespan, and promoting health.

Aging
Sirtuins, known as the "guardians of the genome," are genes that protect organisms (from plants to mammals) from degeneration and disease. When these genes sense that the body is under physical stress, such as from exercise or hunger, they dispatch troops to defend the body. Sirtuins can maintain genomic integrity, promote DNA repair, and have shown age-related characteristics, such as lifespan extension, in model animals.
NAD+ is the fuel that drives these genes to function. Just as a car cannot drive without fuel, Sirtuins require NAD+ to operate. Research findings indicate that increasing NAD+ levels in the body can activate silent regulatory proteins and extend the lifespan of yeast, worms, and mice. Although NAD+ supplementation has shown encouraging results in animal models, scientists are still investigating how these results translate to humans.
Muscle Function
Mitochondria serve as the power source for the human body and are crucial for our athletic performance. NAD+ is one of the key factors in maintaining healthy mitochondria and stable energy output.
An increase in NAD+ levels in muscles can improve mitochondrial function and physical condition in mice. Other studies have also shown that mice supplemented with NAD+ are leaner and can run further on a treadmill, demonstrating enhanced athletic ability. Adult animals with higher NAD+ levels also perform better than their age-matched counterparts.
Metabolic Diseases
Obesity has been declared an epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is one of the most common diseases in modern society. Obesity can lead to other metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, which resulted in 1.6 million deaths globally in 2016.
Aging and high-fat diets reduce NAD+ levels in the body. Studies have shown that even in elderly mice, taking NAD+ supplements can alleviate diet-related and age-related weight gain and improve their physical performance. Other research has even reversed the diabetic effects in female mice, indicating new strategies for combating metabolic disorders.

Heart Function
The elasticity of arteries acts as a buffer between the pressure waves generated by heartbeats. However, as we age, arteries become stiff, leading to hypertension, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. According to the CDC, someone dies from cardiovascular disease every 37 seconds in the U.S. alone.
Hypertension can lead to heart enlargement and arterial blockage, resulting in strokes. Elevated NAD+ levels can protect the heart and improve heart function. In mice, NAD+ supplementation has restored NAD+ levels in the heart to baseline levels and prevented damage due to lack of blood flow. Other studies have shown that NAD+ supplements can protect mice from abnormal heart enlargement.
Neurodegenerative Diseases
According to data from the World Health Organization, by 2050, the global population aged 60 and above is expected to reach 2 billion, nearly double that of 2015. People around the world are living longer. However, aging is a major risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, which can lead to cognitive impairment.
In mice with Alzheimer's disease, increasing NAD+ levels can reduce protein accumulation that disrupts cell communication and enhance cognitive function. When there is insufficient blood flow to the brain, raising NAD+ levels can also protect brain cells from death. Many studies conducted in animal models have proposed new prospects for promoting healthy brain aging and preventing neurodegenerative diseases.
